Here are drawings of the ram pump that Tristan drew and built in
How the Marquess Was Won. The top picture is a view of the outside,
and below is a cutaway view showing the inner workings. These pictures
were scanned from hand-colored engravings that were in an 1821 copy of a
popular magazine called Ackermann's Repository. The
accompanying text included instructions on how to build a ram pump, calling
it, A simple Hydraulic Engine, which will raise Water to a very
considerable elevation, without manual force or assistance.
The ram
pump was invented by a Frenchman, Joseph-Michel Montgolfier, in 1796.
