Ram Pump

Exterior of the pump

Here are drawings of the ram pump that Tristan drew and built in Alexandra. The top picture is a view of the outside, and below is a cutaway view showing the inner workings. These pictures were scanned from hand-colored engravings that were in an 1821 copy of a popular magazine called Ackermann's Repository. The accompanying text included instructions on how to build a ram pump, calling it, A simple Hydraulic Engine, which will raise Water to a very considerable elevation, without manual force or assistance. The ram pump was invented by a Frenchman, Joseph-Michel Montgolfier, in 1796.
